Using Assessments To Empower Student Learning (AAC #1577)

This course will examine classroom assessment practices that contribute to developing a self-directed learning mindset in all students. The focus is “building Capacity for Student-Centered, Goal Directed Learning.” Through stories, examples and student testimonials, participants will learn the value and impact of engaging students in settings and monitoring their own SMART goals. This course captures the motivational aspects of student ownership in their learning and provides the audience with real and timely examples of how teachers across the country are using SMART goals as a key classroom strategy. The role of Professional Learning Communities as the capacity-building vehicle for implementing the classroom and student SMART improvement processes will be examined. Focus will also be on “Assessment Practices That Create Self-Directed Learners” for students who are college and career ready, are willing and able to learn, independent of external rewards and punishments.

 Outcomes:

  • Participants will be able to develop the capacity of school leaders to support teachers with student-centered, goal-directed learning.
  • Participants will understand the role of professional learning communities as the capacity-building vehicle for implementing classroom and student SMART improvement processes.
  • Participants will be able to develop capacity to lead assessment practices that create self-directed learners.
  • Participants will be able to examine classroom assessment practices that contribute to developing self-directed learners.
