Successful Remediation of the Unsatisfactory Teacher (AAC #1011)

The purpose of this session is to teach administrators progressive discipline for teachers, including proper documentation and an observation process that focuses on improvement. Participants will identify sources of evidence to determine the competency level of the teacher, learn a process to remediate unsatisfactory teachers, be able to conduct the “crucial conversation” with the teacher regarding his or her performance, and learn how to assemble the evidence necessary for a successful dismissal.

 Outcomes:

  • Participants will be able to identify sources of evidence to determine the competency level of teachers.
  • Participants will be able to use a process to remediate unsatisfactory teachers, including the identification of strengths/weaknesses, plan for improvement, benchmarks of expected performance and a timeline for improvement.
  • Participants will be able to conduct the “crucial conversations” with the individual teacher regarding his or her performance.
  • If the remediation is not successful, the participant will be able to assemble the evidence necessary for a successful dismissal of the teacher.
  • Participants will be able to make a presentation on this topic to their peers.
